This honor, which celebrates the finest players as selected by their peers, was originally known by this name. In 2009, a partnership between FIFPRO and FIFA led to a rebranding of the award to "FIFA FIFPRO World 11," also known as the FIFA Team of the Year, while maintaining the same voting process. As of 2024, FIFPRO has taken sole responsibility for the management of the award, reverting it to its original title: FIFPRO World 11.

The FIFPRO Team of the Year, selected through ballots cast by professional players worldwide, stands as the sole international accolade exclusively chosen by the athletes themselves. The criteria for eligibility are based on performances from August 4, 2025, to July 19, 2026, with a requirement for participants to have been involved in at least 30 official matches during this span.

The final lineup will consist of one goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders, three forwards, with the remaining spot going to the non-goalkeeper player who secures the most votes.
